Poland vs Netherlands: Euro 2024 Group D clash preview
Netherlands seek to extend dominance over Poland in Group D opener
Poland will be without star striker Robert Lewandowski for their Euro 2024 opener against Netherlands, who are unbeaten in their last 12 meetings with the Poles.
Poland and Netherlands will kick off their Euro 2024 campaigns when they face off in Group D on June 16. The match will be played at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg, Germany, and will be the first meeting between the two sides since a friendly in 2020.
Poland will be looking to make a statement in their first match of the tournament, but they will be without their talismanic striker Robert Lewandowski. The Bayern Munich forward is Poland's all-time leading scorer, but he is currently injured and will not be available for selection.
In Lewandowski's absence, Poland will likely look to Krzysztof Piatek to lead the line. The Hertha Berlin striker has scored 10 goals in 20 appearances for Poland and will be hoping to add to his tally against Netherlands.
Netherlands, meanwhile, will be confident of victory. They are ranked eighth in the world by FIFA and have a wealth of experience in major tournaments. They reached the semi-finals of the 2014 World Cup and the final of the 2016 European Championships.
The Dutch will be led by Memphis Depay, who is in fine form for Barcelona. The forward has scored 12 goals in his last 10 appearances for club and country and will be looking to add to his tally against Poland.
