The Gambian government has released a draft of a new constitution for public discussion. The draft will be gazetted for three months and another 10 days, as required by the 1997 constitution.

The reintroduction of the draft constitution has sparked heated debate, with opinions sharply divided on the inclusion and omission of certain provisions.

Solicitor General Hussein Thomasi revealed that the government is currently conducting consultations to bring back the 2020 draft constitution, which was initially rejected by the National Assembly.

  • The draft constitution will be open for public discussion for three months.
  • Another 10 days will be allocated for gazettement.
  • The government is seeking public input to ensure a comprehensive and inclusive constitution.

The public is encouraged to engage in the discussion and provide feedback on the proposed changes to the constitution.

According to the Solicitor General, the government aims to create a constitution that reflects the aspirations of all Gambians.
